Baggage Policy

The following list of articles may not be carried in checked-in or carry-on baggage:

  • Flammable or poisonous compressed gasses

  • Lithium batteries or lithium battery powered equipment containing those batteries

  • Corrosive materials (acids, mercury, etc)

  • Explosives (fireworks and easily ignited items, disposable and refillable lighters)

  • Magnetised materials

  • Oxidising substances / poisonous, toxic or infectious substances / radioactive material

If you are unsure whether an item is a dangerous good, please enquire with our team.

Items that are commonly asked about:

  • Safety matches and lighters may be carried in in your pocket or by hand

  • Aerosols such as deodorant or bug spray may be carried in checked-in baggage only and must be fitted with a cap

  • E-cigarettes may be carried by hand or in carry-on baggage

  • Camping gas cannisters are prohibited on all scheduled flights; however, they may be carried on some chartered flights to the beach. Please get in contact with our team to confirm.

All fare paying customers have a 15kg baggage limit which must be checked-in 30 minutes prior to departure.

One small carry-on item such as a handbag, day pack or laptop bag may be taken on board.

Excess and Over-sized Baggage

All excess/over-sized baggage is subject to weight availability on the flight and may be deferred until space is available.

Whilst we do not charge for excess baggage, the carrier reserves the right to limit the amount permitted as excess at check-in. Anything above this permitted amount may be considered freight, and may be subject to freight charges. Please see Terms and Conditions for more info about freight.

Items such as car seats, push chairs and bikes etc. are considered excess baggage and are subject to space availability on the day. 

If you wish to ensure excess/over-sized baggage travels on your flight with no delay, please enquire with our team. You will need to purchase an extra seat to ensure there is sufficient space on the aircraft.

Wheelchairs travelling with the owner are free of charge, please advise Stewart Island Flights prior to travel

Infants

Check-in

Stewart Island Flights considers children aged three and under as infants. Infants travel free of charge and must sit on your lap, we will provide lap belt extensions. Infants travelling free of charge do not have a baggage allowance.

If you wish to transport a firearm, please get in contact with our team.

  • Check-in is located inside the Invercargill Airport Terminal and closes 30 minutes prior to departure.

 Oban

  • Check-in is located at the Stewart Island Flights Depot and closes 40 minutes prior to departure.
